Seeking parentage of Jan Berent Brons (ca. 1738-1795) of Groenlo and Deventer

Bericht door Steve Barnhoorn » 06 apr 2022, 04:35

For nearly 30 years, I have been attempting to piece together the origins of Berent Brons (or Jan Berent Brons), son of Jan Brons. Originally, this ancestor of mine was from Groenlo, Gelderland.

An attestation of their marriage, in the Dutch Reformed Church, recorded at Groenlo, shows 28.06.1760 d. 28 juni - Jan Berent Brons, soon van Jan Brons te Deventer, met Maria Elisabeth Wansinks, j.d. van Antonij Wansink van hier. Met attest. vertrokken.
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/CF3 ... 6BA805D165
In July 1760, the marriage was recorded at Deventer: https://proxy.archieven.nl/0/2AB54BD92 ... 0AAB84FF61

I have some slight reason to believe that Berent Brons (or Jan Berent as he was called in one record) was the son of Jan Brons and Swaantje Gerrijts Alberts.

A little background on this family:

Jan Brons and Swaantje Gerrijts Alberts were married 15 October 1724 at Eibergen
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... &cat=40795

Jan and Swaantje were the parents of the following:

Johanna "Janna" Brons, baptized on 10 February 1726 in Ruurlo:
Scan 77: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... &cat=40795
Married Michiel Jansen ter Schegget 22 May 1746 in Groenlo:
Scan 339: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=119219

Gerrijt Brons, baptized on 18 April 1728 in Ruurlo
Scan 81: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... &cat=40795
Married Megtelt Hiddink on 5 August 1752 (Gerrit styled as son of the late Jan Brons):
Scan 358: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=119219

Machteld Brons, baptized on 6 June 1729 in Groenlo
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/FA9 ... BD5FD1B6EF
Married Harmannus Desker on 1 April 1753 in Groenlo (Machteld styled as daughter of the Jan Brons):
Scan 359: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=119219

Maria Everdina Brons, born about 1730, likely at Groenlo; married Willem Hasselo on 2 May 1751( Styled as the daughter of the late Jan Brons):
Scan 354: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... at=119219
Maria Everdina Brons was deceased before 19 December 1759 when her husband Willem Hasselo remarried to Geertruijd Lankhost:
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/BC4 ... 19D5E4BCB2

Hendricus Brons, baptized on 5 March 1734 in Groenlo
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/FA9 ... BD5FD1B6EF
Married Geertjen Breuker on 19 March 1756 in Gelselaar (Styled as son of the late Jan Brons):
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/106 ... 47BF80CEC1
See also: https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/6D3 ... 53B761C01 (Styled as son of Jan Brons)

Gerharda Brons, baptized on 11 March 1736 in Groenlo
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/FA9 ... BD5FD1B6EF

Jan Brons died sometime before 2 May 1751, as evidenced by the record of the second marriage of daughter Maria
"d. 4 april - Willem te Hasselo, j.m. soon van wijlen Jan de Hasselo van Loghem, met Maria Everdina Brons , j.d. van wijlen Jan Brons van hier. Getrout d. 2 mei."
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/014 ... 91C8D210A1

The youngest child might be Jan Berent Brons (born about 1738, estimate based on marriage date) with a marriage record of sorts was recorded on 28 June 1760 at Groenlo to Maria Elisabeth Wansinks:
https://permalink.geldersarchief.nl/CF3 ... 6BA805D165
28.06.1760 d. 28 juni - Jan Berent Brons, soon van Jan Brons te Deventer, met Maria Elisabeth Wansinks, j.d. van Antonij Wansink van hier. Met attest. vertrokken.
Where I am stumped is this act, dated 4 August 1752:
See scans 52 through 54:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=106750

The only children mentioned in the 1752 record are Johanna, Gerrit, Meghtleina (Machteld?), Henricus, Gerharda Brons, and Maria Everdina. Jan Berent does not appear in this record. Is it because he was underage (about 14 or thereabouts?). Clearly, like some of his presumed siblings, his marriage record shows Jan Berent styled as a son of Jan Brons.

Incidentally, there is a burial entry for the wife of Jan Brons, recorded 16 September 1767 (Swaantje Gerrijts Alberts?):
Scan 440: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=119219

Jan Berent (Bernardus) Brons and Maria Elisabeth Wansink were the parents of 8 children, all baptized in RK in Deventer. Jan Berent was buried on 3 April 1795 and Maria was buried on 12 May 1789 in Deventer.

This is where I am at with my research. I would welcome feedback and help.

Thank you in advance.

————————————————————————————————————————

As you can plainly see, I do not see any clear naming patterns with this family in connection with Jan Brons and Swaantje Gerrijts Alberts. Indeed, none of the presumed siblings of Jan Berent do not appear as baptismal witnesses. On the maternal side, there is evidence (Maria's grandmother). The last name Jansen was witnesses might be a possible clue.

NOTE: There is a five-year gap between the Berent and Maria's marriage and the baptism of their child in 1765. Conceivably, two more children could have been born to this couple. I searched Deventer RK registers, and nothing showed up until 1765.

Again, any help would truly be appreciated in resolving this man's origins.

In this document of 01-07-1741 in Groenlo, the guardians Jan Brons, Jan Otto Coebemeijer and Isaac van Berlijn, who are guardians over the 6 children of the late Jan Brons and Swaantien Gerrits, give power to Pieter Vatebinder (Secretaris der stad Hasselt), to act for the children in the heritage of the late Jan Peleman (who lived in Hasselt), having been the childrens "oudoom".
Later in this part you can read that both Jan Brons and Swaantien Gerrits have already passed away by 1741 ("momberen over de onmondige kinderen van wijlen Jan Brons bij wijlen Swaantien Garrits eheluiden geprocreert").

https://archief.amsterdam/indexen/perso ... 2asc%22%7D
In Amsterdam (19-03-1743) there is a transport act where the guardians of the 6 children of Jan Brons en Swaantjen Gerrits are again mentioned together with other people as heirs of Jan Pele, married to Hendrike Kluders. Jan Pele (looking at the marriage in Amsterdam) is from Vorgten (=Vorchten).

Probably worth while looking into these family members.

Thanks for looking these up. Very sad the parents died, leaving behind their 6 children.

I did a headcount, if I were to add Jan Berent to this family unit, it would bring the total number of children to 7. So, it does look like I have the correct family. So, who was the "Jan Brons," father of Jan Berent Brons? I never did find the baptism for Jan Berent Brons.

I have to agree. This one is going to be tough and unsure of the next steps because a) No baptism has been found, and b) unable to find any court records in Deventer online that might have the answer.

According to the Volkstelling 1748 (Transcripties), page 3, there was a Jan Bruens listed with (2) kinderen boven 10 jaren, (2) kinderen onder 10 jaren. Not much to go on, I admit. See here: https://historischcentrumoverijssel.nl ... raalte.pdf

Hi Ria: Thanks for providing me with these links. I went through the entire part devoted to just Deventer, and no families by the name Brons, Broens, Bruens, and other possible name variants did not appear. Any other localities I should explore?
